Azumanga
Daioh:
Also known as “Great
King Azumanga”, Azumanga Daioh is a Japanese comedy based on a popular 4-panel yonkoma manga of the same name that transports viewers into
the daily lives of school-aged girls during their tenure at an
unnamed Japanese high school. Lighthearted and funny, this series is
not only a delightful read but a great insight into the lives of
school kids in the Land of the Rising Sun.
High
School of the Dead:
Our school experience certainly wasn’t this…curvy. High
School of the Dead, like
its manga counterpart, is one of the more bizarre, salacious and, frankly, pretty insane series to hit in a long time. Zombies invade a
high school and a group of students band together to avoid their untimely deaths and to shoot guns with “interesting” parts of their
anatomy. As you may have guessed, this is a bit on the NSFW side.
Fruit
Basket:
Though it starts with the death of our protagonist’s mother, Fruit
Basket (or
Furuba) turns into a series about a newly orphaned schoolgirl,
living with a group of students who happen to be the physical
embodiments of the Chinese Zodiac signs. The twist: they uncontrollably morph into
said astronomical animal avatars when hugged by members of the
opposite sex.
Kids
on the Slope: Created
by Cowboy
Bebop mastermind
Shinichiro Watanabe, Kids
on the Slope is
one of the more unique series to debut in a long time. Set in the
1960’s, the story follows a former honor roll student on his move
across Japan, and his subsequent obsession with the newly emerging
art form of jazz music. Fast, funny and filled with awesome tunes,
this is one show not to miss, Daddy-O.
